Vestergaard Frandsen Group donates 20 PermaNets® to DAPP HOPE Station Lusaka
Aug 30, 2003 |
The DAPP HOPE Station Lusaka has kicked off it's September campaign with an anti-Malaria day at their premises in Mtendere. This fits very well to our campaign to help people, especially those living with HIV, to take good care of their health. We were very happy when our country Director, Jane Jensen phoned to say that she had secured a donation of mosquito nets from a representative of the Vestergaard Frandsen Group. They are the inventors of the insecticide treated net called Permanet.
The donation of 20 nets inspired us to make an event at the Station. On Friday, 30th August we called together the participants in our different trainings - the Positive Living Advocates Course and the Positive Living Training. We started with a short training session, during which we secured that each participant was ready and able to tell friends and neighbours all about malaria … what it is, how it is transmitted, why it is especially important for People Living with HIV to avoid getting malaria, how you can reduce your risk of getting malaria (especially focussing on sleeping under a treated net), recognising the symptoms of malaria and what to do if you suspect that you have malaria.
We were assisted in this training by a donation of IEC materials from our partners Society for Family Health. They gave a teaching pack, which included a facilitator's book with all the information people need about malaria as well as posters and pamphlets. This was well received, as it meant that even those not selected to receive a free net could be given some IEC materials. The participants received these gratefully as it gave them a good way to start up conversations in their community.
