Africa Outside Edge - Liberia update - October 2007
The world's first South African humanitarian expedition circumnavigating Africa through 33 countries in Land Rovers and boats arrived in Monrovia on 4th October 2007 after several days of travel on very bad, wet and muddy roads from the Ivorian border. As the team struggled to reach Monrovia, PermaNet® LLINs were distributed along the road to people in need.
The team, headed Kingsley Holgate, was hosted in Monrovia by Liberia Enterprise for Logistics & Services [LELS], Vestergaard Frandsen's agent in Liberia. LELS staff posed with the team in preparation for the contribution of 500 PermaNet® to the MoH & SW in Monrovia. The Scroll of Peace and Goodwill in support of malaria prevention was endorsed by Sekou Cisse, General Manager for LELS pledging his support to the team during their journey through the Mano River states: Liberia, Guinea & Sierra Leone.
The expedition team then went on to contribution 500 lifesaving PermaNet® to the National Malaria Control Programme. This was done through the Deputy Minister for Administration, MoH & SW, at the Ministry's office in Monrovia. Kingsley Holgate made the presentation while the Deputy Minister for Administration gave a note of thanks on behalf of the Ministry and the Malaria Programme. The acting Malaria Programme Manager, Mr. Tolbert Nyenswah, also endorsed the Scroll. Various media outlets were invited to cover the occasion.
On the way out of Liberia, more PermaNet® were distributed to school children in Daniels Town in Grand Cape Mount County on 6th October 2007. The school authorities together with the school children were extremely happy to receive this lifesaving gift. This was demonstrated by kids dancing with their PermaNet® in the air after the distribution.
