Vestergaard Frandsen Responds to Cyclone Victims in Myanmar
Hundreds of Thousands of PermaNet® Bed Nets and Tens of Thousands of LifeStraw® Water Filters to Aid Ravaged Communities across Myanmar
New York and Lausanne, Switzerland- June 20, 2008 - Vestergaard Frandsen, a world leader in the development of disease control textiles, announced today that thousands of its products have begun to arrive in Myanmar to aid the victims of tropical cyclone Nargis.
As of today, more than 744000 PermaNet® long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, designed to prevent the transmission of malaria, and 16,200 LifeStraw® portable water purifiers have been shipped to Myanmar.
"We are honored and humbled that so many of our lifesaving products are on the way to Myanmar, where they will help reduce suffering and save lives on a massive scale," said Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, CEO of the company bearing his family name. "Our products are designed to be especially useful in emergency situations like this since they require no electricity, batteries or spare parts to operate effectively. The crisis in Myanmar is indeed severe. But, based on lessons we learned while responding to other disasters, like the Asian tsunami of 2004 and 2005 Kashmir earthquake, we know that prompt response is critical to saving lives."
Vestergaard Frandsen's customers in the public and private sector have been leaders in responding to Cyclone Nargis. Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen praised the U.S. Agency for International Development, World Health Organization, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Samaritan's Purse, American Red Cross, Rotary International, World Vision, Convoy of Hope and others who have responded so quickly to the natural disaster.
PermaNet® 2.0 is a ready-to-use mosquito bed net impregnated with a biodegradable insecticide. A progressive release of insecticide from the fabric guarantees retention of the net's efficacy even after 20 washes. The PermaNet® 2.0 bed net is environment-friendly, and reduces the total exposure of insecticide in the environment. This bed net requires no re-treatment or dipping, and contains a dirt repellent feature to keep it clean longer. PermaNet® 2.0 has a WHOPES (World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme) recommendation, which declares it safe and effective for the prevention and control of malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
LifeStraw® water purifiers have been developed as a practical way of preventing disease and saving lives, as well as achieving the U.N.'s Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people living without sustainable access to safe water by the year 2015. LifeStraw® and LifeStraw® Family are complimentary point-of-use water filters that help people obtain safe drinking water inside and outside of the home.
