Insecticide Resistance a Priority on the Global Health Agenda

The Global Plan on Insecticide Resistance Management (GPIRM) was launched on 15 May 2012 by the Global Malaria Programme at WHO in Geneva. The GPIRM represents input that has been gathered and synthesized from over 130 stakeholders from all constituencies of the malaria control community. The overall goal of the GPIRM is to maintain effectiveness of vector control tools by putting forward a comprehensive strategy at the global and country levels. The need for a global database on insecticide resistance data was mentioned by several experts as critical to the successful coordination of all efforts as well as the need to develop standardised procedures for testing tools designed for use with resistant malaria vectors. Why does PermaNet® 3.0 have an increased efficacy with pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors?

The synergist increases the efficacy of the deltamethrin and works in two major ways: by enhancing the penetration of the deltamethrin into the insect¹ and by inhibiting the metabolic enzymes the mosquito uses to sequester or break down this insecticide².
