PermaNet® Curtains - Concept

Image of siblings in front of PermaNet CurtainsThe PermaNet® technology, developed by Vestergaard Frandsen, manages the challenging task of controlling the slow release and migration of the insecticide impregnated in the yarn to the surface of the net. This is what makes the PermaNet® tools “long-lasting”, ensuring that the insecticide is always present at the surface of the net, even after washing and several years of use.

Global health agencies like the WHO realized the need for long-lasting tools for the prevention of vector-borne diseases, as the majority of net owners did not re-treat their nets after the stipulated period of time, thus rendering the tool ineffective at repelling and killing mosquitoes, and subsequently increasing the risk of the user contracting diseases like malaria and dengue.

The PermaNet® technology is unique, as it enables one to wash the nets and curtains without any loss in effectiveness of killing mosquitoes and without requiring re-treatment during its specified lifetime.

Vestergaard Frandsen uses its PermaNet® technology to combat malaria as well as many of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as dengue, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and lymphatic filariasis (Elephantiasis), which can take a high social and economic toll on the affected populations, cause physical incapacitation that limits school attendance, and impair work productivity in African, Asian as well as South and Central American countries.

PermaNet® long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and net curtains provide efficacious vector control to reduce the transmission of the aforementioned diseases. While PermaNet® Bednets kill and repel night-biting mosquitoes, users are protected from the day-biting vectors by PermaNet® Net Curtains. Thus, the tools compliment each other as they provide day and night protection from disease-transmitting vectors.

To create positive health impact and sustainability, consumer acceptance and usability is of primary importance. PermaNet® Bednets and Net Curtains have therefore been developed in various colours, patterns, shapes and sizes.
