ZeroVector® Durable Lining

What other pests are controlled by Durable Lining?

DL is effective in preventing malaria as well as other important vector-borne diseases (e.g. dengue and leishmaniasis) by controlling mosquitoes, triatomes, and flies. It also controls other nuisance pests such as ants, cockroaches, termites and bedbugs.

How is Durable Lining disposed?

Dispose DL by following prevailing country, federal, state, and local regulations.

There is an odour when Durable Lining is first installed. Is this hazardous?

The insecticide in DL is deltamethrin, a colourless crystalline powder with low volatility. It is not the cause of odours associated with DL. Polyethylene plastic, from which yarn is extruded, has volatile minor components which impart a characteristic wax-like odour. This odour is temporary and disappears shortly after DL is installed.

What steps should be taken to maintain Durable Lining?

The effectiveness of DL is reduced when covered with dust, dirt or grime. Clean the surface periodically when the build-up of dust is noticed.

Will Durable Lining make the house more hot or dark?

No, there will be no adverse effect from covering walls of sleeping rooms with DL. Consumer surveys where DL is installed show just the opposite: rooms where DL is installed become more appealing.

Why are special nail caps needed?

DL is expected to remain in good, tight condition covering walls for many years. It must be able to bear its weight and that of any heavy objects that get hooked in the fabric. It must be able to withstand stress in localized areas as might occur from pulling or peeling actions. It must be easy to install on various wall surfaces such as mud, brick, or wood. After testing a wide variety of fixing methods (adhesives, tapes, staples, nails, screws, hooks, mud plasters), research shows that a local nail combined with our special nail cap provides the strongest attachment to any wall surface. Tests on mud walls show the fabric would rip before the nail + cap could be pulled out. This nail cap system provides unmatched durability for the installation of DL.

What colours are available?

The standard colours for routine production and availability are blue and green. However, if an adequate quantity is ordered, we can offer customised colours.

Will malaria be prevented if the outside bushes are not covered or sprayed?

Yes. DL targets the mosquitoes that transmit malaria, which feed and rest inside houses.

If the ceiling is not covered, will there still be protection against malaria?

Yes, DL will effectively reduce mosquito density when the walls are covered but the ceiling is not.

Does it matter what type of wall or roof material is used to build a house?

Unlike IRS, which is specifically limited to smooth and non-porous surfaces, the key benefit of using DL is that it can cover walls made of any material without compromising effectiveness. DL is factory treated so dosing is uniform across the treated surface and is maintained for an extended time. Trial results from Mali show that type of roofing material has no effect on the mosquito controlling performance of DL.

Is it enough to just install in my house and not the neighbours' houses?

As with IRS, at least 70% of houses in a neighbourhood need to have DL installed in order to maximise the impact on disease reduction.

Does my family need to stay outside for a couple of hours after installation like they do after IRS?

No. The family can enter the house immediately after DL is installed.

Do we need to remove all our household belongings before Durable Lining is installed, like we must before spraying?

Unlike IRS, you just need to remove items from the walls so that there is enough room to move while the material is installed on the walls.

Do all the rooms in a house need to be covered as with IRS?

All sleeping rooms in a house should be covered with DL because, most commonly, people are infected via mosquitoes that bite during sleeping hours.

What is the effective lifespan of Durable Lining?

Unlike IRS, which needs to be repeated every 6 to 12 months, the insecticide reservoir in DL is expected to remain effective for minimum three years. A few studies in progress have already completed four years.

What insecticide is used in Durable Lining and how safe is it?

Deltamethrin, a WHO-recommended insecticide product, is used in DL. It has been successfully used for controlling malaria mosquitoes in many countries. Deltamethrin is proven to be safe and effective for fighting malaria. It is not harmful to humans or animals when used as directed. It does not create adverse effects in the environment when properly used.

How does Durable Lining work?

The insecticide is incorporated into every strand of the coloured yarn. Through a controlled migration technology, the insecticide is continually refreshed at the surface of the fabric. Mosquitoes and other insects that come in contact with this treated surface acquire a lethal dose while resting or walking on the liner surface.

What is Durable Lining?

DL is a simple, durable and effective alternative to IRS. It is a lining of loosely woven high density polyethylene panels which, when installed on the walls of a house, provide protection against mosquitoes and enhance the beauty of traditional rural home interiors.
